As an author, social media is a large part of my life. I’m not complaining. I love connecting with readers, long-distance family, and friends. It’s an incredible tool for building community, sharing stories, and keeping up with others, but sometimes, it’s a distraction, taking me away from what’s really important.
I’ve seen lots of media referring to people setting their phones aside for a day, or a weekend. Weekends are precious to me. Often filled with grandchildren, time with my husband, and catching up on reading. I write four to five books each year. Not to mention, promoting, marketing, and connecting with others. A slow down from time to time is a gift. A chance to recharge. It’s easy to loose yourself in the constant notifications and endless scrolling.
Recently, I’ve made a conscious effort to stop picking up my phone every time it dings. That small change has made a big difference. I’m more present, more aware, and more able to enjoy the life happening right in front of me.
Unplugging from social media, even just on the weekends, helps bring focus back to the present moment. We have all been out and about and seen whole families eating together, and everyone on their phones. I don’t want to miss those moments or conversations. I want to enjoy life’s simple pleasures—morning coffee, a walk outside, time with loved ones. Time is best felt with others.
Taking a break doesn’t mean abandoning social media or the connections it brings. It simply means creating healthy boundaries. For me, it’s about balance—staying connected while also protecting my peace. By unplugging on the weekends, I’ve found more joy, more creativity, and a deeper appreciation for everyday life.
I encourage you to choose at least one day each week, to unplug, and recharge.
