A Word For The New Year

A new year arrives like a fresh, unmarked page—full of promise, yet often weighted with expectations we stack far too high. We hope for better health, greater security, and smoother paths than the year before. While those hopes are good, they can sometimes leave us weary before the year even begins.

Each year, I try to keep things simple. Instead of long lists of resolutions, I choose a single word to guide me—one that can shape my choices, my reactions, and my heart. In years past, that word has been intentional or determination. This year, my word is grace.

Grace is something we pray for often: God’s favor, His strength, and His mercy for the days ahead. It’s the quiet assurance that our past failures do not define us and that new beginnings are possible through divine help. Grace allows us to move forward with hope rather than regret.

This year, I want to extend the same grace I’ve been given to others. In seeking the beauty of ordinary days, I hope to embrace the joy and peace already around me and to live with a spirit of gratitude. Grace reminds me to soften my judgments, to respond with kindness, and to recognize that everyone is carrying unseen burdens.

Perhaps most importantly, I want to offer myself grace as well—being less critical when I fall short and more patient as I grow. Progress doesn’t require perfection; it asks only for faithfulness and humility.

As 2026 begins, I invite you to reflect as well. What is your word for the year? A challenge you want to face? A dream you’re ready to pursue? Whatever you choose, may it guide you gently—and may grace meet you every step of the way.
